McAfee AVERT Stinger 10

Free stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses

In a world where security is playing a key role every time we use the computer, every single application that joins the fight against malware is worth a try, especially when it comes as a very light solution. This is exactly how the guys over at McAfee decided to develop the so-called AVERT Stinger, an application that promises to detect and remove a number of viruses easier than a traditional antivirus solution.

There’s no installation procedure, which is pretty great, especially when considering that viruses often attempt to block installation of security tools. It is delivered as a stand-alone executable file that can be directly double-clicked for running.

The interface is minimal and you’ll definitely have no problems using it. There are only four buttons at the top of main and single window, one of which is the preferences one that give you access to a bunch of settings regarding the application.

The way it works however is pretty efficient, especially since it’s developed specifically to fight against certain types of infections. Unfortunately, during our tests we discovered that the scanning process goes quite slow, obviously depending on the amount of data stored on the computer, but in case you have a full hard disk expect a time of more than an hour or two.

Plus, the application it’s quite friendly with computer resources and we guess it wasn’t even supposed to be since its only job is to detect those annoying viruses and kill them all. Still, a higher scanning speed plus a lighter approach when it comes to hardware requirements would be great.

As a conclusion, if you are struggling to get rid of a virus and no stand-alone antivirus solution does the job, McAfee AVERT Stinger is worth the money. Errr, say what? Money? Oh yes, it’s absolutely free!
